Hindi Typing Guide: Learn the Devanagari InScript Keyboard

Choose your Hindi input method

TypeScore Lab offers a built-in Devanagari InScript mode. It converts physical English QWERTY keys to fixed Devanagari characters, so you can practise without installing a keyboard. Keep the switch on when your computer shows ENG.

If Windows, macOS, or Linux already has your preferred Hindi keyboard enabled, switch off Built-in InScript and use the system input normally. This is especially useful for a phonetic IME, which converts Roman spellings into Hindi suggestions.

Learn the InScript home row

Begin with the home row. The unshifted A to L area produces vowel signs and frequently used consonants: A gives ो, S gives े, D gives ्, F gives ि, G gives ु, H gives प, J gives र, K gives क, and L gives त. The on-screen keyboard keeps the English key visible beneath each Devanagari output.

Dependent vowel signs are typed after a consonant even when they appear visually before it. For example, कि is entered as क followed by ि. Let Unicode rendering place the sign correctly on screen.

Type matras and conjunct letters

A Hindi consonant carries an inherent vowel. Add a matra to change it, or press the halant key to remove the vowel before entering another consonant. In the built-in map, D produces the halant ्. This makes combinations such as क plus ् plus ष appear as क्ष.

Practise short families such as क, का, कि, की, कु, कू, के, कै, को, and कौ. Then repeat useful conjuncts including प्र, क्र, त्र, श्र, and क्ष inside real words.

Build speed without losing शुद्धता

Start with ten-word practice and keep accuracy above 95 percent. Move to short quotes only after basic letters and matras feel predictable. Timed passages develop reading flow, while the key report identifies characters that still cause hesitation.

A useful daily routine is three minutes of key review, five minutes of words, five minutes of sentences, and two minutes of error correction. Relax your wrists and stop when repeated mistakes suggest fatigue.

Use Hindi typing results

Compare net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, consistency, and corrections. A large gap between raw and net speed usually means that pushing harder is producing extra errors. Repeat one level until accuracy and consistency remain stable across several tests.
